What is threepence coins?

Threepence coins were small silver coins that were in circulation in the United Kingdom from the 16th century until decimalisation in 1971.

In the 20th century, threepence coins were made of nickel-brass and had a diameter of 21mm. The obverse of the coin featured the portrait of the reigning monarch at the time, while the reverse featured a design of a thrift plant.

During World War II, due to the scarcity of silver, threepence coins were made of cupronickel, which is a combination of copper and nickel.

Threepence coins were eventually replaced by the decimal 5p coin in 1971. However, they are still collected as historical artifacts and can be found through coin dealers, online auctions, and at various coin shows.
